I'm still becoming me!

Still Becoming - My Debut Album Is Here

Today feels like one of those moments I’ll probably need a little while to fully process.

My debut album, Still Becoming, is finally out.

This album has been a long time coming, although in a strange way I think that’s exactly what it needed to be. Still Becoming is a collection of songs about growing up, changing direction, getting things wrong, starting again, and slowly realising that life rarely follows the neat little plan you once imagined for yourself.

When you’re younger, it’s easy to picture life as a straight line.

You’ll do this by a certain age. You’ll become this kind of person. You’ll live here. You’ll have these people around you. You’ll know exactly where you’re going.

Then life starts throwing curve balls.

People come and go. Friendships change. Relationships change. Homes change. Dreams change. Sometimes the things you desperately wanted turn out not to be right for you at all. Other times, something you never planned for ends up becoming one of the most important parts of your life.

A lot of the songs on Still Becoming live somewhere inside those moments.

They look back at experiences from growing up, the people and places that helped shape me, the choices I made, and some of the versions of myself I’ve left behind along the way. There are songs about uncertainty, fear, nostalgia, moving on, finding confidence and learning to accept that you don’t always need to have everything figured out.

That idea eventually became the heart of the album.

Still becoming.

Not finished. Not completely certain. Not necessarily where you thought you would be.

Just still changing.

I think there can be so much pressure to reach some imaginary point where you’ve finally “made it” or become the person you were supposed to be. But I’m starting to think that point probably doesn’t exist.

Maybe we’re always becoming something.

Every experience adds something. Every disappointment changes the map a little. Every unexpected turn sends you somewhere you hadn’t considered before.

And sometimes those detours become the story.

Releasing my first album feels like putting a collection of those stories into the world. Some are very personal, some are reflective, some are fun, and some came from moments that probably didn’t feel particularly funny while I was living them.

Together, though, they tell the story of someone trying to make sense of where she’s been while accepting that she still has absolutely no idea where everything is going.

And I’m strangely comfortable with that.

So here it is.

Indra Jean — Still Becoming.

My debut album.

A collection of songs about growing up, getting older, changing plans, surviving the curve balls and discovering that maybe life was never supposed to follow the original blueprint anyway.

Thanks to everyone who has listened to the songs, supported the music and followed along while this album slowly became what it is.

This chapter might be finished.

But I’m still becoming.
